A fisherman in southern China found a live bomb inside one of his squid.
The man — identified only as Mr. Huang by the Guangzhou Daily — said that while he was gutting the squid, his knife suddenly hit something metallic.
That turned out to be a 3-lb. unexploded bomb. The 8-in.-long device had apparently been swallowed by the squid — itself measuring over 3 ft. The mollusk was caught in shallow waters off Guangdong province and taken to the local fish market.
Chinese authorities speculated that the bomb, although old and rusty, was fully operational and might have been dropped by a warplane. They could not say how old it was or whether it was of Chinese origin, writes the Daily Mail. Police took the bomb away to be detonated in a controlled explosion.
Huang, who has been a fishmonger for 10 years, told the Guangzhou Daily: “This sort of squid lives close to the shore and normally makes a meal of small fish and prawns.
“Perhaps he thought the bomb was his favorite food and gulped it down. He certainly had a big belly when he was caught.”
Reporting the incident, the Guangzhou Daily reminded its readers to always call the police if they find explosives in their food.
